💔 NEVER LET GO — Episode Fourteen: “The Price of His Past”
Ivy stopped a cab and arrived at the location she had been given by the strange caller. It was a roadside area, dusty and strangely quiet. The woman stood beside her car waving slightly so that Ivy could identify her. She appeared to be in her early thirties, composed but uneasy.
“You got me restless with that phone call the other day,” Ivy said, her voice sharper than intended.
“I expected that. I should have told you everything a very long time ago, but the enemies have always prevented me. That is because your parents are billionaires. Let us get into the car before someone suspects anything. The evil ones are everywhere,” the woman replied and immediately got in.
Ivy’s breath caught. Her heartbeat quickened. She climbed in beside the woman, filled with curiosity and confusion.
“What do you mean by saying my parents are billionaires? Who are they? Where are they? How did you even know them all these years? And how do you know me and even got my number?"
“Calm down,” the woman whispered. “Let me take you to them first. All your questions will be answered very soon. They will explain everything. I cannot say anything right now. All I can tell you is that they have missed you deeply.”
As they drove off, Ivy felt her chest swelling with joy and fear at the same time. The possibility of finding her parents numbed every other thought.
For thirty minutes they travelled until they reached a quiet, deserted street. The woman stepped out and motioned for Ivy to follow through a narrow path behind a huge building. Ivy hesitated. The bushes around them rustled eerily. Something felt wrong. But the thought of reuniting with her parents pushed her forward, even when her instincts screamed otherwise.
Then fear gripped her fully.
“This place is too bushy. I am scared,” Ivy whispered in trembling confusion.
Before she could say another word, the woman pulled out a gun. Ivy gasped and tried to scream, but the woman threatened to shoot her instantly. Ivy’s legs weakened. The woman forced her to walk ahead, guiding her into an unfinished building. Ivy cried and begged, but the woman showed no emotion.
Inside, three other women entered holding long canes. Ivy collapsed to her knees in terror. The one who appeared to be their leader approached her with a mean, satisfied smile.
“So Stanley has finally decided to be a husband and eventually, a father. What makes him think he can escape our vengeance after dumping us like worthless trash?” she said mockingly.
Ivy stared in confusion.
“You see, Stanley will never marry after he separated me from my first love. As long as he loves you, your absence will crush him completely. It will destroy him the way he destroyed some of us,” the woman continued.
Before Ivy could fully make sense of the leader’s bitter words, she snapped her fingers sharply. It was enough to send a cold wave through Ivy’s chest. Two of the women stepped forward, their expressions hardened.
One of them swung her cane lightly, not with the intent to brutalize her, but to send a warning. The cane landed on Ivy’s arm with a sharp sting.
“Ah!” Ivy cried out, wincing as she held her arm.
Another woman struck her on her side, a little harder but still controlled, more to frighten her than to cause real injury. The sudden pain made Ivy lose her balance, and she sank to the dusty floor, panting in fear.
“Please,” Ivy whispered, her voice quivering. “I do not know what you want from me. I have never hurt anyone.”
The women circled her slowly, their presence suffocating. Ivy’s heart pounded so violently she felt lightheaded. She was not bleeding, but her skin throbbed from the stings. Her body shook more from panic than pain.
The leader crouched slightly to meet Ivy’s terrified gaze. “Good. You feel that? That little sting is nothing compared to what we are capable of. Consider it a reminder that we are not joking.”
Ivy swallowed hard, tears spilling uncontrollably. “What have I done? Why are you doing this? Please… I beg you.”
“Because Stanley must suffer,” the leader replied calmly, almost too calmly. “And the only way to hurt him… is through you.”
Ivy’s breath caught. Her hands trembled as she clutched the hem of her dress.
“We are not here to break your bones,” the leader continued, standing upright again. “We only want you to understand that we hold your life in our hands. And if you try to stay with him, if you even dream of running back to him… that is when we will stop being gentle.”
Gentle. The word felt like poison.
Ivy shivered, her entire body tensed and small on the floor. The punishment had not been severe, but the message behind it was terrifyingly clear. The real weapon wasn’t the cane.
It was the threat. It was the hatred. It was the promise of something far worse if she ever disobeyed.
And in that moment, Ivy understood she was trapped in something far darker than she had imagined.
The leader took the gun and pointed it at Ivy who felt her eyes turning.
“I will spare you only because you are not the one who offended us. But you must erase yourself from Stanley’s life forever. Leave this state or leave this country, I don't care. Never contact Stanley. Never let him see you again. We will monitor you. If you ever reach out to him, we will kill you without hesitation. Give me your phone now,” she ordered coldly.
Ivy quickly handed it over with trembling hands.
“One of these ladies will drive you to any distant state of your choice, but it must be far from here. She will drive you now, and you must not scream on the road. If you do, she won't hesitate to shoot you even if it means her going to prison for life.”
As the leader walked away with the others, she paused and turned back.
“My name is Stacey. I strike like a viper. I will make Stanley’s life loveless and empty. He thinks he can beat me with his belt, force me to break up with my first love, make me lose my womb after convincing me to have an abortion for his child with the promise of making me the only woman in his miserable life, and then walk away freely? This is only the beginning. I will watch him drown in loneliness for the pain he caused me and other vulnerable women,” she sneered before disappearing.
The remaining lady in the building with Ivy happened to be the one who had brought her earlier.
"I hope you've seen your dear parents dear Ivy?" She mocked and shoved her toward the car. Ivy struggled to walk because of her bruises, but she obeyed.
Meanwhile, later that evening, Stanley returned home full of excitement and love. He had bought beautiful ornaments and expensive shoes for Ivy. He entered the compound singing happily. But Nkechi rushed to him with worry in her eyes.
“Ivy has been gone since afternoon,” she said.
Stanley froze. “Where did she say she was going?”
“She did not tell me anything even though I insisted.”
“How could you let her leave the house alone? Are you that careless?” Stanley yelled, his voice burning with anger.
“I begged her to let me follow, but she refused. She is not a child. I thought maybe she went to see you at the company,” Nkechi replied, and Stanley almost slapped her if she hadn't taken a few steps backwards.
Stanley dialled Ivy’s number over and over. She did not pick. On the fifth attempt, someone answered.
A chilling female voice spoke.
“Hello Stanley. Stop wasting your time calling this number. After I am done with you, you will regret the day our paths ever crossed. Worthless man.”
The threatening call ended.
Stanley stood frozen. The phone dropped from his hand along with the gifts he bought. His chest felt like it stopped moving.
“Brother, what did she say?” Nkechi asked tremblingly.
Stanley did not answer. He picked up his phone slowly, turned around and rushed to his car. His face was pale, his eyes wide with fear.
He drove out into the night like a man chasing his own heartbeat in search of Ivy.
