THE GODDESS WHO OWNED THE THRONE
EPISODE 12: “The Throne That Fought Back”
Inside the vortex…
there was no water.
No ground.
No sky.
Just an endless void—
and in the center of it…
A massive throne.
Tall as a mountain.
Dark as midnight.
Alive as a breathing beast.
Obinna staggered back, shaking.
The throne’s voice echoed through the void.
“YOU SEEK FREEDOM?”
Obinna swallowed hard.
“I—I came to reclaim my soul.”
The throne laughed.
A cold, rumbling, ancient laugh.
“YOU SOLD YOURSELF BEFORE YOU EVEN BECAME KING.”
Chains shot from the throne,
wrapping around Obinna’s wrists and ankles—
CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!
He screamed in pain.
Outside the vortex, Adaeze heard his distant cry
and collapsed into Oke Mmuo’s arms.
Inside—
Obinna tried to pull free.
“I never agreed to belong to you!”
The Throne Spirit materialized.
Tall.
Shadowed.
Its face a swirling mask of every king that ruled before.
“Ambition binds you.”
Another chain wrapped around his chest.
“Greed shapes you.”
Another chain coiled around his neck.
“Fear owns you.”
Obinna collapsed to his knees.
The throne whispered:
“Say it.
Admit the truth of your heart.
Only then will the chains weaken.”
Obinna struggled to breathe.
“What… truth?”
The throne leaned closer.
“WHY did you seek the river goddess that night?”
Obinna shook his head violently.
“I wanted to save my people!”
The throne BOOMED with thunder.
“LIE.”
A chain tightened.
“Ahhhhhh!”
The throne thundered:
“WHY DID YOU WANT THE CROWN?”
Obinna panted, tears mixing with fear.
“I wanted… I wanted justice.”
“LIE.”
The chain around his throat tightened until he choked.
The throne roared so loudly
the void shook:
“WHY DID YOU WANT TO BE KING?”
Obinna’s voice cracked, “I— I— I…”
The chains squeezed his bones.
“Say it,” the throne whispered.
“Say the reason you never told ANYONE…”
Obinna’s eyes filled with tears.
Suddenly—
he stopped resisting.
Stopped pretending.
Stopped lying.
And whispered the truth:
“…because I was tired of being a nobody.”
All the chains froze.
Obinna continued, voice breaking:
“I was tired of being ignored.
Tired of being powerless.
Tired of watching the chiefs disrespect me…
like I didn’t matter.”
The throne leaned closer.
Obinna shouted:
“I WANTED TO PROVE I WAS WORTH SOMETHING!”
The chains loosened.
The throne fell silent.
And then— for the first time—
It nodded.
A deep, ancient acknowledgment.
“Truth weakens bondage.”
All the chains turned into dust.
Obinna collapsed to the ground
gasping for air.
But the throne wasn’t done.
“One truth remains.”
The void rippled.
A child appeared.
Not his son.
A boy of about 10.
The throne whispered:
“Who is this?”
Obinna’s heart shattered.
“No…
Not him…”
The throne boomed:
“Name him!”
Obinna trembled violently.
“My…
my brother.”
The void darkened.
The throne said:
“The one who should have been king.”
Obinna screamed:
“NO! STOP!”
The spirit walked around him.
“The chiefs preferred him.
The elders trusted him.
Your father wanted HIM to be king.”
“STOP!!!” Obinna cried.
The throne spirit crouched beside him.
“You didn’t go to the river goddess because you were desperate.”
It leaned close.
“You went because you wanted to OUTSHINE him.”
Obinna sobbed uncontrollably.
His fists slammed into the void.
“Yes!!!
YES!!!
I WANTED TO BE CHOSEN OVER HIM!!
I WANTED THE CROWN TO BE MINE!!!
ARE YOU SATISFIED?!”
Silence.
The throne slowly straightened.
“Now… you are free of lies.”
Light burst around Obinna.
A roar shook the void.
The chains reappeared—
but this time, they unlocked themselves
and shattered into glowing fragments.
The Throne Spirit bowed.
“YOU HAVE FACED YOUR TRUE SELF.
NOW EARN YOUR FREEDOM.”
A blinding gate opened ahead.
Outside the vortex—
the river goddess flinched.
The river king whispered:
“He is coming.”
Adaeze gasped through her tears.
“Is he… alive?”
The goddess’s voice was low.
“Alive? Yes.”
A pause.
“But not unchanged.”
Oke Mmuo stepped forward.
“Then the severance is complete?”
The river goddess shook her head slowly.
“Not yet.”
Thunder rumbled across the sky.
“He faced his truth…”
her eyes narrowed—
“…but now he must face ME.”
The vortex exploded with light.
Obinna’s silhouette stepped out.
Wounded.
Shaking.
But alive.
Adaeze screamed in relief.
“OBINNA!!!”
Obinna looked up—
and saw the goddess waiting at the riverbank.
Calm.
Cold.
Unmoved.
She smiled faintly.
“Welcome back, King.”
Her voice turned sharp.
“Now we settle your debt.”
