The days after Tosin’s visit returned to their usual pattern, but something had changed inside Amaka. She woke up early as always, prepared breakfast, cleaned the house, and waited for Chidera to return from work. On the outside, everything looked normal. Inside her mind, it was not.

Chidera left the house before sunrise every morning. He dressed neatly, kissed Amaka on the cheek, and reminded her to lock the door properly. His government job demanded long hours, meetings, and constant attention. He believed he was doing the right thing. Providing money, security, and respect was, to him, the definition of being a good husband.

Amaka watched him leave each day and felt proud of him, but also lonely. The apartment became too quiet after he left. She spent hours scrolling on her phone, watching movies, or cleaning things that were already clean. Sometimes she sat on the couch doing nothing, just thinking.

One afternoon, Tosin sent a message.

“Hope you’re doing well today.”

Amaka stared at her phone for a long time before replying.

“I’m fine. Hope you’re good too.”

That simple message turned into a long conversation. They talked about small things—traffic, food, movies, and old stories from university days that Tosin shared about Chidera. Amaka laughed more than she had laughed in weeks.

From that day, the messages became frequent. Sometimes Tosin checked on her in the morning. Other times, he sent jokes in the afternoon. He never said anything rude or inappropriate. He was careful, respectful, and friendly. That made it feel harmless.

Chidera noticed nothing. When he came home, Amaka still cooked, still listened to his stories, still smiled. She never mentioned Tosin’s messages. There was no reason to, she told herself. They were just talking.

One evening, Chidera mentioned casually, “Tosin said he might stop by one of these days. He said business has been stressful.”

Amaka nodded calmly. “That’s fine.”

But inside, her heart beat faster.

A few days later, Tosin came again. This time, it was intentional. He called first and made sure Chidera was still at work.

“I’ll just stay a bit,” Tosin said when Amaka opened the door.

They sat in the living room. The conversation flowed easily. Tosin talked about his struggles in business, the pressure to succeed, and how lonely life could feel sometimes. Amaka listened closely. No one had spoken to her that openly in a long time.

“You’re lucky,” Tosin said suddenly. “Not many women manage a home this well. Chidera is lucky to have you.”

Amaka smiled, a little embarrassed. “Thank you.”

They sat quietly for a moment. The silence was comfortable, not awkward.

From that day, Tosin started visiting more often. Sometimes it was short. Sometimes it lasted hours. Amaka began to look forward to those visits. She dressed a little better on days she knew Tosin might come. She noticed herself laughing more, smiling more, feeling seen.

Still, nothing physical happened. No touching. No flirting. Just long conversations and shared smiles.

But emotions were quietly growing.

One evening, after Tosin left, Amaka sat alone and felt guilty. She knew something was wrong. She was hiding something from her husband, even if it wasn’t physical. She promised herself she would keep distance.

The next morning, Tosin messaged again.

“I enjoyed yesterday. Talking to you makes my day better.”

Amaka stared at the message. She did not reply immediately. When she finally did, she typed:

“Me too.”

That single reply crossed a line in her heart.

Chidera remained unaware. He trusted Tosin completely. He trusted Amaka even more. To him, his home was safe, his marriage solid, and his friendship unbreakable.

But slowly, quietly, emotions were forming where they should not exist. What started as friendship was becoming something deeper, something dangerous.

And none of them were ready for what would come next.
